Widely regarded as the 80's kitchen accessory, the Breville sandwich toaster was capable of transforming your ordinary, boring cheese and ham toasties into gorgeous clamshell works of art which would at first incinerate the tastebuds of anyone profane enough to attempt to eat them and then cool without reference to the laws of thermodynamics into a glutinous mass capable of welding those little ceramic shielding tiles onto the Space Shuttle more firmly even than Araldite.

The Breville required that one butter the sandwich both inside and outside, thus adding heart disease to the range of hellish punishments inflicted upon the sacreligiously hungry and was a device truly of its time, the time that brought us executive toys, deely boppers, Sir Clive Sinclair and Sigue Sigue Sputnik.

Long may it rest in the kitchen cupboard of history.
