Ongoing conspiracy theory that the Academy Award-winning movie Gladiator (2000) is based on a rehashed script of Braveheart (1995).

The parallels are hard to ignore:

• Studly Australian-native lead actor (Russel Crowe, Mel Gibson)
• Heir to royal power unfit for rule, from predecessor's point of view
• Main character's loved one(s) killed because of cruel government
• Main character spends time away from homeland preparing for revenge
• Main character defies the royal hierarchy and is treated as a hero after his death
• Main character hallucinates about his wife while dying

Yes, the plot is as old as time, but apparently Hollywood considers it "tried and true." And their theories must be correct, since both received 5 Oscars.
