Bobby McFerrin was born on the 11th March 1950 in New York, USA. He was born into a musical family, his parents both being opera singers, but Bobby was far more interested in jazz music. He began on the piano, training at both the Juilliard School and at Sacremento State College. He was noticed in 1979 while performing with Jon Hendricks after a decade spent working as an accompanist and singer. By 1983 he was a household name, renowned for his individual vocal style and innovative stage performances.

His piano playing became secondary to his voice, and it is for his distinctive vocals that he is now best known and loved. He has released many albums, and has featured on lots more. I recommend 'Bobby McFerrin - EMI Jazz Masters' released by EMI as a good starter album.
