1963 black & white British film starring
Tom Courtenay and
Julie Christie, directed by
John Schlesinger. Billy Fisher (Courtenay) is a young man stuck in a
dead-end career (he's an
undertaker's assistant) who would rather
dream than
do. While being berated by his
father for being
lazy, Billy dreams of a great military victory. He always has his head in the clouds, which often causes him to tell
little white lies to cover his tracks, until he meets Liz (Christie), a very strong, free-spirited woman who gives him the opportunity to run away from his dreary life.
This is an interesting film about internal redemption. It's probably best known in the indie world because of the Yo La Tengo song, "Tom Courtenay" which is both about the actor and this film.
