Trumpeter, composer, educator. His playing style has the sparse, sumi-e qualities of 50's Miles Davis, translated to a free improvisational setting. As a producer for Savoy Records, he was one of the first to record the 60's avant-garde, and he was one of the first jazz educators to bring that avant-garde to academe, founding Bennington College's Black Music Program.
