A Spanish hero of the 9th century whose deeds were sang by minstrels of the time. Lope de Vega wrote several plays about Benardo in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, revitalizing him as a folklore hero. Benardo's greatest deed takes place during battle at Roncesvalles where Del Carpio supposedly defeated Roland, a Frankish commander in Charlemagne's army.
