In Norse myth, Bergelmir was the son of Thrudgelmir and the grandson of Aurgelmir (Ymir). Odin and his brothers killed all of the giants, except for Bergelmir and his wife, who climbed into the trunk of a hollow tree and thus survived. When things settled down, they became the progenitors of a new, younger race of frost giants.
