A typeface designed by Francesco Griffo in 1495 for the publisher Aldus Manutius. It is still in common use. It was first used in De Aetna, a work by the great scholar (and later cardinal) Pietro Bembo (1470-1547). The modern face was given the name Bembo by Monotype in 1929.

It is more compact than Garamond, which it resembles. The ascenders of lower-case letters are slightly high than its capital letters.
