Serves 4

1 cup uncooked rice (brown or white)
2 cups water
1/2 lb ground beef *
2 teaspoons oil
2 tablespoons soy sauce
spices to taste
    • sugar
    • salt
    • pepper
    • ground ginger
2 tablespoons dry red wine (optional)

Cook rice in water until almost tender (15 - 18 minutes).

Blend all other ingredients together. Spread the meat mix evenly across the top of the rice in the pan. Cover and simmer briefly until meat is steamed and rice is done (about 4 - 5 minutes).

Stir meat into rice and serve. Suggested condiment: more soy sauce.


* Ground lamb can be substituted for an interesting variation.
