The German word for blueprint, now used by English speaking biologists to refer to the fundamental body plan of a group of animals. A bauplan is the generalized body plan of an 'archetypal' member of a taxon. It often refers to only certain aspects of the design, such as Osteichthyes' air-bladder or Aves' wings.
