In 1513
Englad was at
war with
France. King
Henry VIII landed with the English Army at
Calais and laid siege to the city of Therouanne.
The French king,
Louis XII, sent an army to defeat Henry and save Therouanne. The French army, with glittering
armour and streaming banners, met the English at Guinegate. After a battle with a few casualties, the French turned and fled. Because the French had used their
spurs to make their horses retreat faster, more than they had used their
weapons, the English called this the Battle of the Spurs.
