When Back to the Future Day
came and went last year, a number of pundits observed the failure
of the film
to properly prognosticate certain goings-on. Two in particular have oft been pointed to:
That the Chicago Cubs would win the World Series of baseball....
And that the President of the United States would be a woman.
In the past year we have seen the advent of a few Back to the Future-ish innovations, with approximate hoverboards
hitting the market, self-tying shoes
being demoed, and fax machines
.... well, still existing in some rare circumstances.
But yesterday, the Chicago Cubs won the World Series of baseball. And Tuesday next, it is a distinct possibility that the next President of the United States will be a woman.
And if so, then Back to the Future
(or more exactly, Back to the Future II
) starts to look a little bit less like future speculation, and a little bit more like prophecy
