Acronym for Ballistic Missile Early Warning System. This is a system of radars and other facilities constructed and operated by NORAD to provide warning in case of a missile attack launched against the U.S. and/or (well, and, I guess) Canada by the USSR. Its facilities have been expanded to cover likely trajectories from China as well. The radars were originally located in the northern part of Canada, like the DEW Line.
