Basic Encoding Rules. A set of encoding rules used in the LDAP and SNMP protocols, among others. It defines rules for encoding and decoding typed data. BER is defined in the ISO 8825 standard and is used as part of the ASN.1 notation.

Each data element in a BER stream is encoded as a type, length, and value. The value may be a BER encoding itself for compound data types.
