The Art Ensemble of Chicago has long been one of the most significant avant-garde jazz groups and the most famous band to come out of the AACM. At a time when most musicians involved with the free jazz movement were playing at a consistently intense level, the Art Ensemble showed how to use space and dynamics creatively and to mix together free form passages with arranged sections.
