Late nineteenth century, early twentieth century poet of Spain, and leader of the so-called "Generacion del 98," a movement towards the rebirth of Spanish literature during the time between the Spanish American War and the Spanish Civil War. At first his work was highly introverted and personal, calling on images of his late wife and his home of Soria. Later, during the Spanish Civil War, his work became vaguely political and bitter as he fled to Paris, where he died on foriegn soil, as predicted in his work.
