Thats right 2,403 years ago citizens of Athens watched plays for two full days!

The Ancient Greeks produced plays in honour of Dionysus, god of wine and fertility. The Greeks told serious stories from religion, myth and history. But there were also hilarious comedies that brightened the event up.

The actors in the plays wore masks. This was so the audience could identify characters. It also allowed actors to play several parts.

Around 2,000 years ago the audience preferred pantomine to comedy and tragedy.
