My memory took me roaming today
Into the years that are gone;
It led me through my childhood
And on, and on and on.
It dwelt on so many problems
From one source or another;
And, oh, so thankful I must be
For an understanding mother.

Now I am a mother with a mother's cares
And how much I want to be
As wise and patient councilor
As my mother has been to me.
So, when my children's problems arise
From one source or another;
They will feel free to come to me
– To an understanding mother
