The All-American Canal, one of the largest irrigation canals in the world, was constructed as part of the 1928 Boulder Canyon Project Act and was started in 1930. It irrigates more than 530,000 acres of farm in the Imperial and Coachella Valleys (California), it also services an additional 68,000 acres as part of the Yuma Project (Arizona, California). The canal also functions for hydroelectric power at 4 seperate points.

In 1948 a 128 mile long branch of the canal was built in order to service the Coachella region and in 1954 an underground lateral system was also constructed. It begins at the Imperial Dam and was given its name as the first canal in the region that was able to not pass through Mexico.
