The mouse in Daniel Keyes' story Flowers for Algernon. In the story, Algernon was the test subject in an experiment to dramatically increase the intelligence of a mammalian brain. The test was a qualified success on Algernon, which led it to be tested on a human subject. Algernon was a barometer for the success of the experiment. Algernon died from brain damage caused by the experiment.
