The 'Dacks region of upstate New York is among the most beautiful and well-preserved wilderness regions in the US. Year-round activities include hiking, canoeing, and camping in the summer, and snowshoeing, cross country skiing, downhill skiing, ice climbing, and winter camping in the winter. You can camp anywhere in the park, with a few regulations:

  • No camping above 4000 feet
  • No camping between 3500 and 4000 feet, except at designated sites
  • No more than 8 people to a campsite
  • No campfires within 150 feet of a trail or body of water
  • No campfires at all in the eastern High Peaks region
  • No campfires above 4000 feet in the western High Peaks region.
Other regulations:
  • Visitors must use snowshoes or skiis when the ground is snow-covered
  • Day-use parties must have no more than 15 people
  • No glass containers
  • Pets must be leashed on marked trails, designated campsites, congregated areas, and above 4000 feet
  • Visitors to the eastern High Peaks must register at the trailhead.
