Persian slave, leader of the Abbasid movement in Khurasan against the Umayyad Caliphate in Damascus. Died 755.

After the proclamation of the first Abbasid Caliph, Abu al-Abbas al-Saffah, Abu Muslim was made governor of Khurasan by the new Caliph. However, al-Saffah's successor, al-Mansur (Caliph 754-775) ordered Abu Muslim to present himself at court, where he was jailed and killed - presumably because al-Mansur had no desire for rebel leaders in his Caliphate, particularly successful ones.
