The AGM-28 Hound Dog is a long range air to ground
missile designed to be launched from the
B-52 Stratofortress in order to maintain its strike capabilities while minimizing risk to the aircraft.
The development contract was awarded to North American Aviation in 1957 and first launched in April of 1959. Powered by an underslung Pratt & Whitney JP5 turbojet engine, the missile could travel at speeds of up to Mach 2, carried a 4 megaton warhead and had a range of up to 500 nautical miles.
The B-52 carried two of the missiles on wing pylons, and could use the engines of the missiles to augment thrust, refueling them from the wing fuel tanks before launch. A total of 600 missiles were produced until production ended in 1963, but the Hound Dog remained in service until 1975.
And yes, it was named after that one Elvis Presley song.
