Starting with the 2002/2003 season with the addition of the Houston Texans, the NFL decided to realign its divisions. The new AFC West now looks like the following:

This is one of the weakest divisions in the AFC, the AFC South is the weakest. This division only has one valid contender and that would be the Oakland Raiders. The Denver Broncos are likely to be back into Super Bowl form, as they get back those injured players that cost them a valid shot at the Super Bowl last year. Although they might not win the division as Oakland is a more superior team, they will likely win a wildcard spot. They are not as good as the John Elway-led team several years ago, but still pretty good. The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Diego Chargers had two of the worst records in the conference in the 2001/2002 season. Both teams have a long way to go to competing again. The Seattle Seahawks is the team that was forced out of this conference, and they know reside in the NFC West.
