On October 17, 2006, YouTube user Kajetokun submitted a video entitled "9000!! NINE THOUSAAAAANDD!". It then became an internet meme.

Internet users suffering from blindness or deafness or using text-based browsers for any other reason will be unable to experience the true comic genius of this video. Open as smoke clears after Goku, our hero, has finished a lengthy power sequence. Or an attack, or something. Pan right to two intimidated bad guys: Vegeta, the leader, and Nappa, his subordinate.

About the video

This video is 1 minute and 50 seconds long, but uses only 15 seconds of footage, which is made to fit the time by repeating it, running it too fast, too slow, back to front, upside-down, et cetera.

The bulk of the video footage is taken from a single episode of Dragonball Z, sometime midway through the Saiyan Saga. The individual who exclaims "It's over nine thousand!" is Vegeta, the primary antagonist of the Saiyan Saga arc, and his associate who asks about the power level is Nappa, his subordinate. The power level in question belongs to Goku, the hero of the show, who at the time of the clip has just finished a lengthy powering-up sequence typical of Dragonball Z. In prior episodes, none of the good guys in the show were able to present any kind of threat to Nappa, let alone Vegeta, who is much more powerful. Now, it seems Goku has somehow become a threat, hence Vegeta's astonishment and rage. Later episodes see Nappa killed and Vegeta beaten handily, though he escapes alive.

The remainder of the footage comes from some other episode of DBZ (Master Roshi is another DBZ character and Piccolo is yet another) and two other anime series which I have yet to identify.

The video has found widespread acclaim, in parts due to including a memorable catchphrase, using footage from a popular TV series, parodying the same series and its excellent comic timing[citation needed]. At the time of writing (February 15, 2008) the video has about 3,000,000 YouTube hits. "It's over nine thousand!" is now an acceptable answer to any question about a numerical value, for example, "What's the temperature outside?" or "How many XP do you have?"
