21st century

The 21st century, which will most probably last from 2001 AD to 2100 AD will be decisive for the survival of humanity on Earth. With no other period in history have so many expectations been heeded as with the first century of the third millennium.

After surviving the Cold War, the nuclear arms race, two World Wars, several genocide attempts, and various flavours of totalitarian regimes, mankind will now have to find solutions and answers to various other problems:

globalisation and the rise in power of multinational corporations
an increasing gap between industrialised and third world countries
overpopulation, and how to feed over 6+ billion hungry souls
how to avoid an environmental holocaust, stop pollution, deforestation, save the rain forests, etc.
ethics and technology: genetical engineering and the redesigned human
culture clash, religious fundamentalism, terrorism

The above list is by no means complete. It is just an example of how complex future issues will be compared to the ones of the 20th century, which were dominated by rather simple dichotomies, such as East vs. West, peace vs. war, democracy vs. totalitarianism, etc.
