Germany competed united again, and the former Soviet Union entered as a
unified team of independent states. This was the last time a winter Olympics was
held the same year as a summer Olympics. New sports were short track skating
and freestyle skiing.
Lyubov Yegorova of the former Soviet Union won three gold medals and two
silver medals in cross country, and Björn Daehlie of Norway won three
gold medals and a silver.
