100baseT is a classification of the Ethernet specification. It is sometimes referred to as Fast Ethernet. It can use fiber-optic or twisted-pair cabling (mostly twisted pair)

  • Normally uses Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP).

  • The maximum segment length using UTP is 100 meters.

  • The theoretical maximum length of a 100baseT system is 2.5 kilometers.

  • The transfer rate of data over the medium is 100Mbps, or 100 million bits per second.

  • The minimum cable rating normally used is Category Five (CAT5). CAT5 is rated at 355Mbps.

  • There is a maximum of 1024 nodes or devices on a single network.

  • 100baseT4 uses four pairs UTP.

  • 100baseTX uses two pairs of UTP.

  • 100baseFX uses a two-strand fiber-optic cable.
