100baseT is a
classification of the Ethernet
specification. It is sometimes referred to as
Fast Ethernet. It can use fiber-optic or twisted-pair cabling (mostly twisted pair)
Normally uses Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP).
The maximum segment length using UTP is 100 meters.
The theoretical maximum length of a 100baseT system is 2.5 kilometers.
The transfer rate of data over the medium is 100Mbps, or 100 million bits per second.
The minimum cable rating normally used is Category Five (CAT5). CAT5 is rated at 355Mbps.
There is a maximum of 1024 nodes or devices on a single network.
100baseT4 uses four pairs UTP.
100baseTX uses two pairs of UTP.
100baseFX uses a two-strand fiber-optic cable.
