The country code top level domain (ccTLD) .GI is assigned to the country of Gibraltar. The TLD is restricted for use that have direct connections with the country.

The connection requirement for a business or commercial enterprise is registeration and a trade license as a local corporation in Gibraltar. Trans-national corporations like Coca-Cola have local bottling concerns and are therefore allowed to have their trademarked domain using the country TLD.

The configured third-level domains include:

  • .com.GI
  • .edu.GI
  • .gov.GI
  • .mod.GI
  • .ltd.GI
  • .org.GI

The .GI ccTLD has been activated by the Gibraltar authorities at the GibNet, the sponsor and registrar since 1995. The ccTLD is used heavily inside the country. Because of the Catalan area not wanting to use the Spanish .ES ccTLD, they began to go with .GI because it was close to the city of Girona. The new ccTLD .CAT was introduced and rules changes now require all second level registrations to be based in Gibraltar.
