Happy birthday, subway! Today is the fiftieth anniversary of Canada's first subway system, here in Toronto. Fittingly, the TTC was feted, and an unprecidented agreement was signed by all three levels of government, to rund the TTC by an additional $1.05 billion over the next five years.

The original Yonge line subway, originally planned as an underground streetcar line but (smartly) re-planned as a real subway line, was from Union station up to Eglinton station. The inaugural trip, from Eglinton to Union, was attended by Premier Leslie Frost and mayor Allan Lamport, among other dignitaries; today the trip was duplicated by our current politicians, such as Premier Dalton McGuinty, mayor David Miller, and others. Prime Minister Paul Martin was not at the ceremonies after the ride, but he was at TTC headquarters this morning for the funding announcement.

Stalin vs. Hitler is a 29 page webcomic featuring our favorite two supervillains of mid- 20th century Europe. As such, the comic is entirely in Russian using the Cyrillic alphabet, but luckily for all of us who don't speak the language, an English translation is provided.

I won't detail anything about the story (it's pretty much one long fight scene, like Dragonball Z but with less posturing). I will tell you where to read it, however. Look to <http://www.comics.aha.ru/rus/stalin/>.

RIP BIS

Interplay put Black Isle Studios out to pasture on December 8, 2003. This resulted in the cancellation of Van Buren, the third game in the Fallout series. If you see anything from BIS from then on, it is simply an imprint like the book industry uses.

Black Isle was originally founded in 1998 by Feargus Urquhart, who left in April 2003 to found Obsidian Entertainment, considered by many to be BIS' successor.

Releases

This list is of games published or developed by BIS. Right now it's just titles as listed on the BIS website (<http://www.blackisle.com/>, and still up, amazingly). I'll be detailing the list sometime soon, hopefully. /msg me if it's been too long or if you have more info for the list.

SeaMonkey (thing)http://everything2.com/user/zaku/writeups/SeaMonkeyzakuhttp://everything2.com/user/zaku2004-02-11T01:15:00Z2004-02-11T01:15:00Z

SeaMonkey is the name of the Mozilla application suite, that monolithic block of browser, mail, composer and chat. While SeaMonkey is still maintained, this is more for the sake of large corporations that have it rolled out and don't want to have to switch to the smaller and faster stand-alone programs such as Firefox and Thunderbird.

Mozilla Sunbird (thing)http://everything2.com/user/zaku/writeups/Mozilla+Sunbirdzakuhttp://everything2.com/user/zaku2004-02-11T00:59:10Z2004-02-11T00:59:10Z

There is little to be said about Mozilla Sunbird, the stand-alone calendar application. It has yet to hit its 0.1 milestone, and continues to use the old XPFE toolkit (rather than the new toolkit sported by Firefox and Thunderbird).

Sunbird is usable, however, unless you want to change preferences. The front-end is nearly indistinguishable from the standard calendar application. It includes support for multiple calendars (including remote calendars). Sunbird is also supposedly themable, but I haven't seen many themes available for calendar or Sunbird, and haven't tried it out.

Sunbird and its parent, the Mozilla calendar application, are still alpha quality (don't let Calendar's version fool you). If you want to check it out or help develop it, the project site is <http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/>.
