Biogeography presents the most easily noticeable evidence for evolution. Species in different parts of the world are different, with many areas having their own indigenous ones. On the other hand, species close to another geographically are usually much more similar. Islands are examples of this--commonly groups of islands have closely related, but still different, species on them. This shows the migration of a group of individuals from one species to another location, which then forms a separate species. Another case, the fact that species inhabiting very similar environments located in different regions of the world are not similar, shows that the randomness of evolution produces different results even under similar circumstances. This is contrary to many previous beliefs (held by people as renowned as Christopher Columbus) that life in similar environments is similar, but which do not hold up to actual observations.

School is over, and the students naturally rush out to leave as soon as possible. A few minutes later, the principal suddenly makes an announcement, "Code Red! Code Red! This is NOT a drill! Everyone get back to their classrooms and shut the doors now!". I was hanging back after class to talk with the teacher, and there were about ten of us left in the room.

Everyone gets pretty scared, and we all run to huddle under our desks. The teacher barricades the door while we hear the sounds of rushing students outside trying to find a room to go to. At first everyone is scared of course, and there is a creepy kind of silence. After a while nothing seems to happen, and so we are all bored at this point. Unfortunately the teacher decided that a game of hearts was not allowed, so we were forced to whisper about our imminent deaths.

These specifically were a freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want-—a "healthy peacetime life", and freedom from fear-—essentially world peace. The speech also expressed his support of American values of democracy and liberty, and argued that America should support Britain in its fight against Germany because Britain represented those exact republican principles. He stated that the US should prepare to enter World War II itself. This rhetoric resulted in the Lend-Lease program with Britain, as well as greatly promoting public support for the war--most people were strongly opposed to American involvement at that point.
Rosie the Riveter (thing)http://everything2.com/user/czarandy/writeups/Rosie+the+Riveterczarandyhttp://everything2.com/user/czarandy2003-05-02T04:19:23Z2003-05-02T04:19:23Z

"Rosie the Riveter" was a song, written by Redd Evans and John Jacob Loebin in 1942, about a woman working in a factory to aid the war effort. The song quickly gained popularity and the name became a nickname for all women working in war industries. Women were vital to American war production, working in shipyards, steel mills, foundries, and warehouses. These jobs were so important that many propaganda posters were made to encourage women to work, even in jobs traditionally held mostly or exclusively by men. After the war, just like after World War I, the jobs were reclaimed by the returning soldiers, and the women were pushed back into the home.
Cancer (thing)http://everything2.com/user/czarandy/writeups/Cancerczarandyhttp://everything2.com/user/czarandy2003-04-09T01:04:34Z2003-04-09T01:04:34Z
Cancer is the result of cells escaping normal control mechanisms, and growing uncontrollably as a result. It is a result of genetic changes--certain genes normally regulate the cell cycle and mutations that alter these genes can cause cancer. Cancer is often caused by mutations resulting from chemical carcinogens, certain viruses, or radiation. These mutations can cause cancer if they occur in proto-oncogenes.

A proto-oncogene is responsible for stimulating cell growth and division, and so a genetic change may result in one becoming much more active, transforming it into an oncogene, which will promote excessive cell growth--cancer. Another important gene is the tumor-supressor gene; it inhibits abnormal cell division. A mutation may cause one of these genes to malfunction, also resulting in effects similar to those of the oncogene.

Another common mutation activates the creation of telomerase. This enzyme prevents the degradation of the ends of chromosomes
…
