Decades ago one of my greatest loves died in a very similar crash with a wrong way driver. Today would have been her birthday. What strange emotions I am now feeling.
August 9, 2010 (person)http://everything2.com/user/_Yup/writeups/August+9%252C+2010_Yuphttp://everything2.com/user/_Yup2010-08-15T23:06:24Z2010-08-15T23:06:24Z
On this day, I returned from a fun trip to Japan. Better than some of my other trips because I got upgraded to first class on the return flight. I think it's a waste of money to buy more expensive seats. This week, I think the top stories from China have
been about the upcoming launch of Shenzhou-7
and the scandal about melamine in dairy products.

I watched a special tonight on CCTV-9 about the
Shenzhou-7 launch. During this mission will
be the first space walk for a Taikonaut. The special
was hosted by that bitchy, short haired woman who often hosts Dialogue (a show in which she spends an hour "interviewing" people by mostly begging the question.)

I'm mostly learning about the dairy scandal through other
media. It sounds horrible and I don't think the Chinese
government wants to broadcast that much about it on CCTV-9.

I wrote this series of jokes, with some help from a few
friends. Each joke involves the same twist on
outsourcing IT jobs to India, without resorting to the typical xenophobic
junk that you encounter in Slashdot forums. (That is,
I never mention anybody in a call center named Sanjay.) Enjoy!

To secure our website, we wanted firewalls on

I think we hired the wrong kind of Indians.

In the ancient Mayan civilization, it was believed that all buildings were living beings. From thatched roof huts
to pyramids. The physical proportions of their buildings
often employed the "golden mean", and certain areas of each building were meant to represent the parts of a body.
But they didn't just intend to physically model nature and
life with their buildings. They also engaged in ceremonial
dedications that were intended to ensoul each building.

These ceremonies consisted of making statements to
dedicate the home or building; and of making offerings to
it. Precious items such as jade, dye, cloth, and
severed animal heads would be buried under the floor in key
areas throughout a building. Each offering would be
symbolic of whichever part of a body the point in the
building represented. Also note that the soul of a building
was often replenished, and some offerings and dedications
were repeated over time.
