Rejoice!

I've gone to great lengths to do this the way that makes everyone happy. Jet-Poop wanted me to quit in a huffing storm and delete all my content. This is my last gift to Jet-Poop.

Dannye and Halspal demanded I "fuck off" forever and told me that not only would this place be better without me, but once I'm gone it would get its magic back and all the wonderful fled noders I've deliberately chased away would come back. E2 will enter a wonderful new Golden Age in my absence. This is my gift to them.

To all you mysterious noders dannye alluded to that seemed to be worried about me causing them physical harm: only person I've harmed tried to rob me at knifepoint: it was in self defence. I promise to forget about you. Honest. This is my gift to E2.

Account's locked. So long. And I mean it this time. To all you who tried to talk me back into this place at HD5: TOLD YOU SO.

Stereotypically, concertgoers to a heavy metal concert will be doing two things: violently throwing their heads back and forward in time with the strumming of power chords on the guitar, and making a hand gesture that is iconic - a fist with the little and index fingers extended, with the thumb sometimes extended as well. The hand gesture is referred to as the devil horns, metal sign, named with a countless number of other terms. It's a hand gesture with a long history, which I'll get to in a moment. It does NOT derive from the American Sign Language for "I Love You". At your typical concert, it is typically raised aloft with the right hand and "pumped" in rhythm with the music, or shaken violently upraised at arm's length.

What's lesser known is how the symbol came into common usage in heavy metal.

There are a few claims to the gesture: Gene Simmons claims to have invented it and used it on the cover of the 1977 album Love Gun. In doing research for a painting of Christ, I went hunting online in the usual gore-zone places for examples of what whips and other implements can do to a human body, for some degree of realism in the painting. And in my online travels, I came across a caning video from Malaysia, filmed for the express purpose of dissuading others from lawlessness.

Back when Michael Fey was causing a stir in the United States with the furore over his being caned in Singapore, the usual "Wal Mart Greeter" gran'pappy Jesus Republican types were saying that maybe a good spankerin' is all these whippersnappers needed, and maybe we should do that here.

A rattan cane wielded by an expert can do some damage. In fact any object of that type can do more damage than most realise. A bullwhip, properly used, can remove someone's hand.

In the video, the accused was led to a wooden frame, to which his hands were tied above his head, and he was strapped to it so he
…December 6, 2008 (log)http://everything2.com/user/Whiskeydaemon/writeups/December+6%252C+2008Whiskeydaemonhttp://everything2.com/user/Whiskeydaemon2008-12-06T03:26:18Z2008-12-06T03:26:18Z

Apologies for the annoying whining. It will cease.

So I learned a new technique.

I used to try to draw by looking at something and reproducing what I saw on paper. That worked, well, as well as you'd expect.

Then I saw some guy measuring with a paintbrush (the stereotypical hand-straight-out-eyeballing-with-one-eye gesture) and tried the same. My drawings got better, but it was a LOT and I mean a LOT of work.

Then I found out about the old atelier technique of enveloping the drawing with a few lines, then subdividing them again, measuring a few angles at a time, rather than trying to skeleton the human figure with primitives or guess at the proportions all at once.

It was like step-wise reduction for the drawing paper.

I don't throw out drawings anymore. They all work. To differing degrees of success depending on my mood and my general amount of time spent, but within an hour, if I simplify faces, hands and feet I can get a damn good image, a sketch good enough to paint from.

It's a certification some people simply cram to get, because of being sick and tired of the lack of upward mobility inherent in a life without a high school diploma.

It's also significantly easier to get than a bona fide high school diploma, but has a connotation that the person was some kind of drop out. For this reason, the joke is that the acronym stands for "Good Enough Diploma".
