These days, the word "stove" refers mainly to an
appliance in most everyone's
kitchen. This piece of
kitchen hardware is much more than a "receptacle for
fuel in which a
fire is made." Most stoves today are powered either by
electricity or with
natural gas. They usually have an
oven which contains one or two adjustable
racks on which
to place
food for
baking, and several
burners on top intended for heating things contained in
pots,
pans,
skillets, etc.
