The Spotted Cuscus is
Australia's largest member of the
Phalanger family of animals (more commonly known as the
Possum). As such, it is a marsupial. It is found only on the tip of
Cape York, but is very common in
New Guinea.
A nocturnal animal, the Spotted Cuscus feeds mostly on fruit and leaves, though it has been known to also eat eggs and meat. It is found almost exclusively in lowland tropical rainforests and mangroves.
Similar in appearance to certain lemurs, the Cuscus has fur that ranges in color from light brown to gray. Only the male Cuscus has spots. The tail is prehensile and is used mainly to grasp branches in order to help it move across the rainforest canopy.
