Melanie Sykes was born in Bottom Mossley, Manchester, England on the 7th of August, 1970. She has two sisters; Samantha (a year older) and Stacy (three years younger).

Mel moved to London in 1989 to join a modelling agency which resulted in appearances in TV commercials for Pearl Drops, Falmer Jeans and, what she's best known for, the Boddingtons commercials. Melanie moved to TV presenting, starting with Sky's Real TV UK and Hit List UK on MTV. She then presented on The Big Breakfast and The Bigger Breakfast on Channel 4.

She secretly got engaged to Daniel Caltagirone (they met through pals at Chris Evans's production company Ginger Productions) and in 2000 married him in the Caribbean, where they wed with no one but hotel guests to witness the ceremony. The pair exchanged gold rings under a palm tree.

Mel has had a string of failed romances. She dated Chris Evans and Sunderland footballer Chris Makin. Before that she was involved with scooter salesman Jago Anderson and the actor Max Beesley. Mel was once quoted as saying, "I was a loose cannon, out and about doing what single girls do, but now I'm in bed by 10pm with a book."

Mel gave birth to Roman Laurence, a boy, in 2002 and she's expecting another in August 2004.
