You've probably seen the Simpsons episode where Homer gets a job at a pioneer reenactment village. Well, we've got one of those just north-west of Toronto. Every Canadian that went to school in southern Ontario is virtually guaranteed to have been there to watch candles get made and eat freshly-baked cookies.

Black Creek is meant to recreate a generic village of the 19th century. During the tourist season (May 1 thru December 31 minus Christmas), a full staff in period costume brings the thirty-odd buildings of the village to life. There's also a fairly modern visitor's centre with the usual complement of interactive displays and conference rooms. Like its counterparts in the United States and elsewhere, the Black Creek hosts occasional historical reenactments of famous battles.

You can get there by taking the Steeles Avenue exit off Hwy 400 and heading east. Don't take the Jane Street exit like the guide suggests or else you'll be rolling through the red light district -- not good vacationing for the kiddies.
