Return to Yogi Berra (person)
Lawrence Peter "Larry" Berra, dubbed Yogi in his teens (Yogi Bear was named after him). A catcher and outfielder for the New York Yankees, 1946-1963, with two brief stints as manager. Casey Stengel called him "My Man" - despite the presence of glamour boys like Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio, Yogi was the offensive and defensive heart of Casey's teams. Also famed for his "Yogi-isms". The feud with George Steinbrenner, begun when Yogi was abruptly fired as manager in 1985, is now over. | Existing: Non-Existing: |
