Rocco Scott LaFaro, from Geneva, New York (but born near Newark, NJ). The second of Ornette Coleman's three great acoustic bassists. Prior to that, he gigged/recorded with the big band of Stan Kenton and the trio of pianist Hampton Hawes, et al, and made a name for himself as an innovator in Bill Evans' trio, pointing the way, perhaps, to the era of bass-as-lead-instrument ushered in by the likes of electric bassist Stanley Clarke. Died in a car crash in 1961, at the age of 25.
