A lawyer and journalist; a sportscaster for ABC. Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, but grew up in Brooklyn. Rode the twin phenomena of Muhammad Ali and Monday Night Football to iconhood. He was the most untelegenic of TV stars - he wore an atrocious toupee, he wasn't a pretty face, he used "big words" (quite eloquently) and his hands tended to shake (a result of allergy medicine, IIRC). But he was a rare honest commentator and critic on the sideshows and excesses of pro sports.
