(1932 - 1995) French writer/director.

Malle made slow and brainy films, the type of movie that's popular with art house crowds and despised by the unwashed masses. A lot of my friends particularly hate My Dinner with André, which is simply an extended conversation between Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory. Vanya on 42nd Street is a minimalist (no costumes, no set) version of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. I thought it kicked ass. Au revoir les enfants was a mini-biography about growing up during WWII.

Malle introduced Brooke Shields (as a 12 year old hooker in Pretty Baby) and Susan Sarandon (in Atlantic City).
