Style of music characterized by heavy beats, inhuman sounds, samples, and general unhappiness. The term itself was coined in the mid seventies by the groundbreaking band Throbbing Gristle and their record label Industrial Records. Good examples of "classic" (aka early) industrial music include bands like Cabaret Voltaire, Leather Nun,Coil,Skinny Puppy and Einsturzende Neubauten. Later industrial music was much influenced by the sounds of techno and heavy metal.
