The Alpinestars are a Manchester electronica duo heavily influenced by local contemporaries New Order and the not-so-local Depeche Mode. They can sometimes sound like Damon Albarn and sometimes like David Byrne.

The two members Richard Woolgar and Glyn Thomas formed after they were allegedly challenged to produce an hours worth of music by a local club night promoter.

They took their name from the manufacturer of Thomas' mountain bike - Alpinestar.

Their first EP - 'Less Vegas' was released in 1999 and followed up a year later by 'Silicon Chick' and 'Kitzbuhel Weekend'.

Their first full length release was in 2001 titled 'B.A.S.I.C'. In 2002, their second album 'White Noise' featured guest singer Brian Molko of Placebo.
