I help to tend the great Machine from the station at Shaft Thirteen, Level Ninety-Nine. I have worked down here for years. I was constructed for extended operations at this depth. There are other stations near enough to mine that I cannot say that I am isolated, exactly. And yet I feel that I would be happy if I could only see the sun again, and speak to someone about other things than darkness and the endless tending of machines.
