Black 47 is named after the middle year of the "Irish Potato Famine." I'm sure you can find plenty of information regarding the fact that the Irish Potato Famine was not, by definition, a famine, but a potato blight, so I won't go into that here. 1847 is now considered to be Black 47, because that's the year with the highest death toll.
