Canadian author Hugh MacLennan's important book about the relationship between English and French Canadians, published in 1945 (during a very divisive period for English and French Canadians, viz. the conscription issue).

Its protagonist Paul Tallard grows up in Quebec and is torn between his English mother and French father, between dual cultures and dual loyalties.

The title has since entered the Canadian vocabulary to represent the difficult nature of French/English discourse in Canada.
