Canadian Politician and former Prime Minister from 21 December 1894 - 27 April 1896.
Bowell was a Prime Minister during the difficult time of the Manitoba Schools Question. Despite being an Orangeman, he took the stand that Manitoba should be forced to reinstate Catholic schooling. He found the debate difficult, since he did not have a seat in the House of Commons. (Mackenzie Bowell was the second Prime Minister to lead the country from the Senate; Sir John J. C. Abbott was the first.) In this position, he was unable to lead and resigned in favor of Charles Tupper after a cabinet revolt.
