Arabic title, used to refer to relatives of the Prophet Muhammad.
Also, a title used in the Ottoman Empire for the individuals charged with the administration of Mecca (Mekkah) and Medina (Madinah) for the Sultan. Usually redundant, since most of these individuals were, in fact, relatives of the Prophet.
