(Japanese: "the faith of the golden light")
Japanese monotheistic religion, founded in 1859 by Bunjiro Kawate (1814-1883). Based in Shinto, Konko-kyo contains elements of magic, exorcism, and oracular prophecy.
From 1900 to 1946, Konko-kyo was officially recognised as one of 13 "accepted" forms of Shinto. Today, however, it is considered a separate religion.
Konko-kyo takes active part in a number of public charities, and in international peace movements.
