A somewhat perverse variation of canoeing where the paddler turns his or her paddle into a tiller and sets up a sail on the boat. While a paddler may occasionally put up a tarp to catch the wind on trips for fun, the sport of canoe-sailing involves more serious sails and rigging.

A canoe-sailing race usually consists of three parts:

  1. a sailing race to a distant marker and back
  2. a paddle sprint, where all rigging, etc, must be in the boat, but the race is with paddle only.
  3. a race under sail and with paddle twice around a three-sided course: sailing, paddling, sailing, paddling, sailing, paddling -- the result being that each side of the triangle is raced in each mode.
